45 students will get the chance to cultivate their entrepreneurial skills this August at a three-week beer brewing and entrepreneurship camp hosted on the joint initiative of the University of Copenhagen, the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark and Copenhagen Business School. The National Food Institute contributes to the summer school with a practical course in brewing beer and developing the students’ skills in entrepreneurship.

University of Copenhagen (UCPH), the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and Copenhagen Business School (CBS) launch a joint summer school in August that mixes beer production with entrepreneurship, innovation with industrial visits and an interdisciplinary cooperation with the sense of business. The summer school is an offer to students, especially within the field of food technology, biotechnology, biology or a mercantile education, which provides the opportunity to work with innovation and entrepreneurship with the beer industry as a starting point.

Whether the student has ambitions of launching their own business or just want to spice up their academic profile with competencies in innovation and entrepreneurship, the Summer School will provide ample opportunity to develop their skills and learn from the professionals through site visits and company presentations. By completing the course the student will gain an understanding of and be able to present a plan for commercialization of an innovative product for the beer industry.

Three universities, two parallel courses

The Summer School offers two parallel tracks with slightly different themes. Students from UCPH, DTU and CBS - as well as other national and international institutions – are free to choose between the two tracks, depending on the content and format they prefer.

The National Food Institute provides a basic, practical introduction to brewing beer while simultaneously developing their skills in entrepreneurship. This course requires the student to be on campus for all three weeks.

UCPH provides a basic theoretical understanding of beer production, quality of beer, beer and health, beer in the community, etc. while simultaneously developing their skills in entrepreneurship. This course will require the student to be on campus for the middle Week 2 while the first and last weeks of summer school will be spent on independent studies and examination.

Week 2 is identical for both courses of the summer school, and as a result, the students will be joining each other that week. Please note that courses will be taught primarily in English.

The National Food Institute focuses on entrepreneurship

The summer school is the first activity throughout the educational program Food Entrepreneurs, which has been granted 2 million Danish kroner from CIEL, Copenhagen Innovation and Entrepreneurship Labs, for the development of interdisciplinary teaching with a connection to the industry. The resources have been granted to develop summer schools and elective courses in 2012 and 2013. The National Food Institute is part of the Food Entrepreneur program.
